How Are They Different?

Traditional comprehensive insurance charges a fixed premium regardless of how much you drive. Pay-As-You-Drive (PAYD) rewards you with a lower premium when you commit to driving within a set mileage limit each year.

Important: What Happens If You Exceed Your Mileage?

With SOMPO MotorSafe, if you exceed your chosen mileage plan and the 500 km grace mileage without purchasing a top-up, your cover will be reduced to Third Party only. This means damage to your own car from accidents will not be covered. You can restore full Comprehensive cover by purchasing a mileage top-up. If your car is under a Hire Purchase agreement, please note that exceeding your mileage without top-up means you may no longer meet your financier's requirement for comprehensive cover.

Odometer accuracy: For MotorSafe, an accurate odometer reading and photo at inception and a functioning odometer are required. Own-damage claims may not be paid if the odometer is tampered with, incorrect at inception, or left unrepaired when faulty.

Which One Suits You?

Your ideal choice depends on how much you drive each year. Here are some common driving profiles to help you decide.

🏢
Office Commuter
15,000–25,000 km/year
→ SOMPO Motor
Daily commuting racks up mileage quickly. A traditional policy ensures uninterrupted comprehensive cover without worrying about mileage limits.
🏠
Work From Home
3,000–6,000 km/year
→ MotorSafe
You mainly drive for errands and weekends. Plan A (5,000 km) could save you up to 50% on your premium.
👴
Retiree
2,000–5,000 km/year
→ MotorSafe
Light driving to markets and family visits. Plan A gives you full cover at the lowest premium.
👨‍👩‍👧
Family (2nd Car)
4,000–8,000 km/year
→ MotorSafe
A second family car used mainly for school runs and shopping. Plan A or B keeps costs down.
🚗
Daily Driver + Outstation
20,000+ km/year
→ SOMPO Motor
Frequent outstation travel means high mileage. Traditional cover avoids the risk of exceeding limits.
🏍️
Weekend Explorer
5,000–10,000 km/year
→ MotorSafe
You drive mostly on weekends for leisure. Plan B (10,000 km) gives a good balance of savings and flexibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about choosing between traditional and pay-as-you-drive motor insurance.

What happens if I exceed my mileage on MotorSafe?
Your cover drops to Third Party only — meaning damage to your own car from accidents won't be covered. You'll need to purchase a mileage top-up to restore full Comprehensive cover. A 500 km grace mileage is automatically included to give you time to top up.
Can I switch from traditional to MotorSafe mid-policy?
You can switch at renewal. Cancelling mid-term may incur short-period cancellation charges, so it's best to plan the switch when your current policy is due for renewal.
What is the SOMPO Tag and do I have to pay for it?
The SOMPO Tag is a small Bluetooth device placed in your car. It's provided free of charge. It tracks your mileage, alerts you when you're close to your limit, and can call for emergency assistance at the press of a button. Replacement costs RM90 if lost or damaged.
Will I still get my No-Claim Discount (NCD)?
Yes. Both SOMPO Motor and SOMPO MotorSafe preserve your NCD entitlement as long as you don't make any claims.
Is flood damage covered?
Yes. Both SOMPO Motor and SOMPO MotorSafe include coverage for special perils such as flood, storm, landslip and other convulsions of nature as part of their comprehensive cover.
Can my company buy MotorSafe for company cars?
Yes. Unlike some competitors, SOMPO MotorSafe is available to both individual and company policyholders, making it suitable for company-owned vehicles with low usage.
Does my odometer reading matter for MotorSafe?
Yes. For MotorSafe, an accurate odometer reading and photo at policy inception and a functioning odometer are required. Own-damage claims may not be paid if the odometer is tampered with, incorrect at inception, or left unrepaired when faulty.
